In the aftermath of the assaults by Hamas, advocates for the rights of Israeli women and the rule of law have been urging prominent international organizations to officially recognize instances of sexual abuse and gender-based violence.

Among those who have been urging UN agencies to recognize these “crimes against humanity” is Professor Halperin-Kaddari, who served on a UN convention addressing gender discrimination for twelve years.

“Unfortunately, not a single one of them used the term’sexual assault’ publicly until about a week ago. According to her, it took them more than seven weeks. Tel Aviv Refuses Cooperation

Sexual assaults that occurred on the 7th of October will be one of the primary foci of an ongoing United Nations committee of inquiry that is looking into accusations of war crimes committed by both the Israelis and the Hamas. Israel, meanwhile, sees the inquiry as prejudiced and has so far refused to cooperate with it.

If Tel Aviv refused to cooperate, the inquiry’s head, Navi Pillay, said, her team could still interview witnesses and survivors outside of Israel.Telling the BBC, “All they [Israel] have to do is let us in,” she went on to say that victims of the assaults should have the right to a United Nations hearing.

According to Ms. Pillay, “every effort” is being made as part of her team’s investigations, and the UN did not wait in admitting that sexual assault had occurred during Hamas’s attacks.

Nearly 240 more were held captive in the 7 October Hamas onslaught on Israel, which murdered 1,200 people.More than 15,500 have been killed in Israel’s military operation since then, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
