Japan’s Princess Aiko is the sole daughter of Japan’s Emperor Naruhito. After finishing college in April, she will start working at the Japanese Red Cross Society.
There are not a lot of details about her new job yet, but she will still be doing official work for the royal family.
Japanese law says that only men are eligible to be king, so the 22-year-old girl is not in line to become king.
Japan has the world’s oldest royal government that is still in power.
Her new boss said in a statement that they want “to completely make arrangements so that the princess can work at ease” and that Princess Aiko has “always had an interest” in the Red Cross.
The group is very close to the imperial family; in fact, former empresses have been honorary leaders.
In October, Princess Aiko traveled to the society with her parents to see an exhibit regarding the work it did to support people after the 1923 Tokyo earthquake. In recent years, she additionally expressed thoughts and prayers to the people who have been hurt or killed in emergencies in Japan.
She is now in her last year of studying Japanese literature and the language at Gakushuin University’s Faculty of Letters. The Japanese public generally like princesses, and many of them are glad for her in her new role.
“Career woman” mom
In Japan, Empress Masako, Princess Aiko’s mother, is known as a “career woman” princess and queen.
The empress went to Harvard and Oxford and is skilled in several languages. She used to be a diplomat.
Only former Empress Michiko and her husband were the first commoners to marry the first in line to the Japanese throne. She did it in 1993.

But after she got married, there was a lot of talk about when and if she would have a son.
The birth of Princess Aiko in 2001 was a big deal, but it didn’t solve the problem of who would be the next princess.
The Japanese government then started to talk about changing the law to let women become emperors.
After five years, Emperor Naruhito’s younger brother had a baby boy named Prince Hisahito, which ended the succession problem.
But it was clear that Crown Princess Masako was under a lot of stress because she was not seen by the public for more than ten years.
In 2004, Naruhito, who was Crown Prince at the time, said to reporters in a very harsh way that his wife had “completely exhausted herself” trying to get used to life in the palace.
After this, the palace said that the princess had a “adjustment disorder,” which most people took to mean depression.

The Japanese media have been writing a lot about Prince Hisahito’s family lately. He is second in line to the throne after his father.
His older sister, Mako, who used to be a princess, married a commoner and went to the US after leaving the imperial family.
A supposed money disagreement between Mr. Komuro’s mother and her ex-fiancé, who said that mother and son had not paid back a debt to him, almost ended the couple’s marriage because of how the public saw them.
In Japan, the results of Mr. Komuro’s New York state bar test were big news until he passed on his third try in 2022.

Princess Aiko was asked about her cousin Princess Mako’s wedding in 2022. She said, “Getting married still seems very far away, and I haven’t given it much thought.” I don’t have a clear picture of my dream partner, but being able to make each other laugh sounds great.
