Stargardt illness is a rare genetic ailment that threatens the eyesight of 11-year-old Nottingham girl Lily-Rae, but she is courageously facing the obstacles that come with it. She has made a moving gesture by making a visual bucket list of all the locations she wants to see before her eyesight gets further worse. Opticians first wrote off Lily-Rae’s deteriorating eyesight as a need for corrective lenses when she was five years old; she was just recently diagnosed in December.
In order to make Lily-Rae’s goals come true, her mother Emma began a campaign. Given her declining eyesight, the young girl dreams of going on a safari in Africa, witnessing the Northern Lights, and taking in the incredible panorama of Paris from atop the Eiffel Tower. Lily-Rae is so focused on her goals that she recently expressed an interest in learning three languages: German, Russian, and Thai.
According to information provided by the Macular Society, Stargardt disease, which affects one out of every 10,000 people, is caused by a small change in one gene. Lily-Rae hopes to one day become a scientist and help find a medication for her disease; she is now taking braille classes at school.
In order to help Lily-Rae achieve her dreams, we are trying to raise £2,500. Even though they are strapped for cash, Emma stresses the importance of making memories with her kid that will last a lifetime. The remarkable nature of Lily-Rae’s ambitions is emphasized when she takes comfort in the community’s response to the call, despite the problems that people today face.
I used to be quite successful in the corporate world; however, now that I’m a mother, my family comes first. I couldn’t afford to do all of the things she wanted to do, even if I worked,” Emma said. She talks about wanting to protect her child from bad things happening to her, therefore these experiences are priceless for them both.
