Ron DeSantis ends his campaign for 2024 and backs Trump over Haley

Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has dropped out of the race for president. He stopped his campaign for the nomination of a Republican and backed the previous president, Donald Trump, just before the primary in New Hampshire. That choice came about after Ron DeSantis poor performance in Iowa, where he lost badly even though he had spent a lot of money there as well. DeSantis used to be seen as the best Republican candidate to run against Trump, but he has dropped from support remarkably quickly.

Now that Ron DeSantis has dropped out, Trump’s main opponent is former U.N. Secretary Nikki Haley. Many of Ron DeSantis fans, on the other hand, are likely to switch their support to Trump over Haley, that is more moderate. About two-thirds of Trump supporters in New Hampshire have said that Trump is their second choice. Trump has a big lead over Haley in the polls, and his team wants to win the state again to make sure he takes the nomination.

Ron DeSantis Exits Presidential Race Amidst Criticism, Leaving Trump-Haley Clash in Spotlight

While criticizing Haley in a video statement, Ron DeSantis backed Trump and said, “He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear: a re-packaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.” At a gathering in Rochester, New Hampshire, Trump said nice things about Ron DeSantis and said he was looking forward to working with him to beat Vice President Joe Biden.

Ron DeSantis Exits Presidential Race Amidst Criticism, Leaving Trump-Haley Clash in Spotlight

Trump has a large lead over Haley in New Hampshire, where he is running for office, and his team hopes for a decisive victory. To win the primary, Trump said Haley had formed a “unholy alliance” with lefties, people who will never support Trump, and Republicans in Name Only (RINOs). Even though Ron DeSantis dropped out, Haley’s hopes depend on how she does in her home state of South Carolina. If she loses there, her campaign is likely over.

Given that Ron DeSantis support is falling and he doesn’t have much of a following in key states, his leaving may not have a big effect on the race. David Kochel, a Republican strategist, doesn’t think Ron DeSantis resignation will change anything, while Ford O’Connell, a Republican consultant with ties to both parties, thinks most of DeSantis’s followers will support Trump.

Once seen as one of the strongest candidates for president, Ron DeSantis had trouble making a clear case to Trump fans and never really got going. Big donors stopped giving money to the campaign because they didn’t like its plan or how it spent its money. DeSantis officially joined the race in May 2023, but he had some problems right away and had to rely on an outside super PAC for important campaign tasks.
