Russia’s largest air attack on ukraine

Russia fired its worst missile attack on Kyiv and several other Ukrainian towns on Friday morning, killing at least 30 people and injuring over 160 others, Ukraine reported on Saturday.

In a statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia “used nearly every type of weapon in its arsenal” against dwellings and a maternity facility.

According to a Ukrainian Air Force spokeswoman, Russia’s air defenses, which were overrun on Friday, have greatly improved.

He went on to say that Russia utilized difficult-to-intercept hypersonic, cruise, and ballistic missiles, including the X-22 type, and that “we’ve never seen so many targets hit simultaneously.”

According to the air force, 114 of the 158 missiles and drones were shot down. This kind of devastation could only be achieved by a direct missile strike.

For months, the damage and fatalities that Ukrainians had been anticipating were mostly the result of falling rubble. A larger threat has now resurfaced.

Yuriy Ignat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, stated that this was a “record number” of missiles and “the most massive missile attack” in the conflict, excluding the early days of relentless bombardment.

According to AFP, the United Nations (UN) denounced the attacks and demanded that they cease “immediately.”

“Regrettably, today’s appalling assaults were only the latest in a series of escalating attacks by the Russian Federation,” said UN Assistant Secretary-General Mohamed Khiari.

Meanwhile, Poland confirmed that a Russian missile had passed through its territory, as General Wieslaw Kukula, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, stated: “Everything suggests that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace… It, too, left.”

Ukraine is encouraging Western partners to retain military support in the face of ongoing Russian assaults.

US President Joe Biden urged Congress to put aside its differences and approve additional aid for Ukraine after Washington released its final batch of armament under current agreements that require Congress to extend them.

“Unless Congress takes urgent action in the new year, we will not be able to continue sending the weapons and vital air defense systems Ukraine needs to protect its people,” Biden said in a statement.

“Congress must step up and act without any further delay.”

After Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed that the UK “must continue to stand with Ukraine—for as long as it takes,” Britain ordered the deployment of hundreds more air-defense missiles to Kyiv.
