Baldur’s Gate 3, Lego Fortnite, and seven more games describe the year 2023

There are a ton of options for gamers in 2023.

There have been so many hits in the last 12 months that it would have been difficult to finish even half of them.

That did not necessarily translate into a successful year for the entire industry: hundreds of businesses lost thousands of employees, and E3, the gigantic convention that was once the greatest event in the gaming calendar, was permanently shut down.

It’s easy to get distracted in a year this exciting, but here are some of the major games of 2023.

Third Gate of Baldur games

Placing his palm to his chin, seemingly lost in meditation, is a man with white hair, pointy ears, and extraordinarily pale complexion. He’s dressed in an ornate green jacket with a high neck and golden shoulder embroidery. Shafts of the medieval robe are a rich purple color. It looks like he is in a wooded area. Two flaming torches mounted on rocks are lighting up the area in the distance because it is nighttime.

He wears a high-necked, elaborate green jacket, with golden patterning on the shoulders. The Medieval garment has deep purple sleeves. He's in what appears to be a forested area. It's night-time, and two flaming torches attached to rocks in the background illuminate the scene

The depth of this role-playing game astounded both players and critics; in the game’s Dungeons & Dragons-based environment, the Forgotten Realms, many gamers easily accumulated over 100 hours of playtime.

Critics were particularly impressed by the story’s flexibility, amount of detail, and abundance of customization options. Every time you play, a whole new set of characters and options are available, thanks to Belgian developer Larian.

Few people were shocked when it won Game of the Year at the largest awards ceremony in the gaming business in December, but many hadn’t predicted this particular result at the beginning of the year.

Helen Ashcroft, a gaming journalist, said of Baldur’s Gate 3: “It was an unexpected success that took the world by storm.”

“There’s a strong narrative, choices that matter, a beautiful open world, an incredible score and voice acting, interesting and varied quests, and so many different ways to play and story threads to explore.”

Zeda’s Legend: Tears of the Kingdom

Along a dusty lane, Link rides his horse and draws a cart full of villagers. The wheels of the carriage light green, indicating to the player that they have been mounted utilizing the new Ultrahand ability in the game.

Breath of the Wild, widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made, has a direct sequel called Tears of the Kingdom. The expansive open environment of the first game was retained in this new one, along with the addition of ultrahand, which allows you to create devices by combining almost anything you can discover.

Developers are frequently terrified of that kind of independence since it leaves so much potential for failure. Still, in spite of the aging Switch hardware, it functioned.

Scottish Twitch broadcaster Argick comments: “Ultrahand is one of the best additions to the series and the things we can do about it are hilarious and useful.”

“There’s so much to do in the game and you can do it in pretty much any order you want without the game trying to push you elsewhere – I’ve still got to explore the rest of the depths.”

Alan Wake II

Over there is a translucent picture of Alan Wake, a bearded guy with straggly hair that falls to his chin and a grey suit. A woman warily approaches the scene in the lower portion of the picture, looking over her shoulder as she does so. She is wearing a blue jacket with FBI inscribed on the back in yellow lettering.

Through the viewpoint of the two main characters, the supernatural horror story left a lasting impression. It seemed unique because of the lavish presentation, unique blend of live action and gameplay, and broader themes.

Additionally, a standout musical segment that included the imaginary band Old Gods of Asgard Turn became one of the year’s most talked-about gaming moments.

“That is one of the best set pieces of 2023 for me,” Argick added. “The song and the manner in which the gaming world incorporates it all.

“It just makes that entire moment something special.”

Spider-Man 2

A scene from Spider-Man 2 shows the superhero leaping into the skies and knocking down an adversary. The enemy falls to the ground with his arms raised over his head and is dressed in a light brown jacket with dark brown arms, while Spider-Man displays articulated spider legs sprouting from his back.

Since Sony, the company that creates the PlayStation 5 system, has a limited release schedule right now, Spider-Man 2, a game made by the PlayStation studio Insomniac, needed to win.

Luckily, I understood. With great reviews upon its exclusive PlayStation 5 release, this well-crafted adventure became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title ever.

It was a technical and cinematic exhibition. Additionally, even though the gameplay wasn’t a significant change from previous Spider-Man games, consumers appreciated the compelling tale and wide array of characters.

Although several gamers expressed dissatisfaction with the comparatively brief playtime, the developers maintained that the registration fee was justified.

Before Insomniac was hit by a massive ransomware attack at the end of the year, the majority of conversations about the studio had individuals complimenting its most recent, best-selling game.

Lego Fortnite

A cheerful, arrogant Lego figure is positioned between a bright pink Lego bear and a yellow, humanoid banana; all three are based on Fortnite player personalities. The tableau, which includes Lego sheep grazing on grass and visible buildings like a church, castle, and log home, extends behind them as they stand in a vibrantly colored field. There’s a lot of action going on; in the distance, we can make out characters felling trees and moving through the village.

With over 400 million registered players, Fortnite is a shooting game that tests players’ endurance, but its developers aren’t afraid to ask for more.

This is most likely even more true now that 800 employees of its developer, Epic Games, were let off earlier in the year.

Its high-profile partnership with Lego for a brand-new mode dubbed Lego Fortnite was one of its major efforts to entice new users. According to Twitch streamer Dando, the mode is “amazing” and substitutes the well-known bricks for Fortnite’s current crafting supplies.

A lego character with a smiling, cocky expression stands between a bright pink Lego bear and yellow, humanoid banana - the three are modelled on player characters from Fortnite. They're in a brightly coloured field, and the scene stretches out behind them, featuring Lego sheep grazing on grass, and structures including a church, castle and log cabin are visible. There's lots of activity going on - we can see characters chopping down trees and milling around the village in the distance.

“It brings in that element of crafting, building and gathering resources – it’s just one of those games you can turn on, switch off, and just be in another world.”

Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival, two more modes intended to draw in more players, debuted alongside Lego Fortnite.

Dando stated: “Eventually you’ll just launch Fortnite and if you’re feeling a certain genre, you don’t need to leave the game.”

The Polish studio CD Projekt Red has been working to rebuild its reputation since the main game’s disastrous 2020 release.

Phantom Liberty expansion and the 2.0 update, which completely corrected the core game, were heralded as giving gamers the experience they should have had from the start.

It obviously didn’t hurt to have Idris Elba in the lead part and a narrative that many actors found to be genuinely touching.

Although the original game sold more than 20 million copies, it’s not exactly an underdog tale—rather, it was a brighter conclusion to a difficult tale.

“This is the kind of thing I love – seeing a game come out the other end like that,” Dando added. “It is almost like they’ve revived themselves.”

Legacy of Hogwarts

A student of East Asian descent dons the black Hogwarts uniform, which is embroidered with a red shield bearing a golden lion, signifying their affiliation with Gryffindor House. The robe is held together at the breast by a thread, revealing the golden trim and velvety crimson lining. With a brightly lighted tip, he holds a wand between his thumb and forefinger in one hand. The student’s body is eerily glowing white due to the wand, which is the only source of light in the otherwise completely dark environment.

A thread holds the robe together at chest level, and we can see the garment's velvety red lining and golden trim. In one hand he holds a wand between his thumb and forefinger, and the tip is brightly illuminated. The wand provides the only source of light in the otherwise pitch black scene, and it casts a spooky white glow on the student's body.
Despite the author’s distance from the project, there were nevertheless loud calls for boycotts during the game’s release.

Even while it attracted a lot of spectators, some streamers chose not to play it, while some critics gave it negative marks since they believed it was impossible to divorce art from the artist. After a decade of release, emotions remain intense.

Critics criticized the game for having monotonous missions and combat, but fans claimed that exploring meticulously detailed copies of their favorite story places was enthralling.

Furthermore, according to data from GamesIndustry.biz, it was the best-selling game of 2023 in both the US and the UK in terms of actual copies, notwithstanding the demonstrations.

The back of a character wearing a spacesuit and helmet is shown in a Starfield screenshot exploring a desolate planet. With cliffs rising out of the earth, it is rough. A white powder, possibly snow or dust, covers the rocks. Another planet and its horizontal rings are visible in the distance.

They had plenty of room, as seen by the empty planets, but most of the time, moving between worlds required using a menu or hands-free navigation.

“It was immersive and it was really pleasant to just run about but then some of the mechanics themselves just felt a bit clunky,” Dando stated.

Many fans thought that Starfield fell short of the high standards set by Bethesda Studios, which produced the adored Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

However, it set records for the publisher, Microsoft, and the developer—likely as a result of its availability on the Game Pass service, which is similar to Netflix.

Starfield has struggled since that first wave, receiving a lot of bad reviews from online retailer Steam.

Until 2024, Bethesda has promised more features and frequent updates, so the journey may not be finished yet.

Grand Theft Auto VI

Grand Theft Auto VI was the subject of one of the year’s biggest gaming stories, despite not being expected until 2025.

Early in December, a 90-second teaser went viral, garnering 90.4 million views in a single day.

Much of what we already knew from leaks was confirmed, including the presence of the first female protagonist in the series to have a voice acting.

But after nearly ten years of waiting, fans went crazy when they finally saw the Rockstar-approved version of its debauched, riotous virtual Miami.

“GTA VI is going to be one of the biggest releases of the year when it drops, so I’m thinking about picking it up,” Argick said, referring to the game’s return to Vice City and apparent Bonnie and Clyde theme.

“The trailer is sending waves throughout the gaming community.”

You can anticipate a seismic impact when the actual game launches.
